Until you feel comfortable driving in the city and Madinat as Sultan Qaboos, you can always use a taxi to find your way around. Taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap – a 10km taxi ride will cost you around RO 2.000. It won’t be hard to find a taxi, because they will often hoot at you as soon as they see you standing on the side of the road. Keep an eye out for the bright orange-and-white cabs, although if you are a woman you should never use one of these at night if you are on your own. In such cases, it is safer to use a private taxi firm such as City Taxi (24 603 363) or Hello Taxi (24 607 011).With cars and petrol both being considerably cheaper in this region than in other parts of the world, you can afford that luxury 4WD vehicle you’ve always wanted – it may not be as environmentally friendly as a little city car that does over 100km per litre, but you will certainly feel much safer, and you’ll realise the importance of this once you see the driving. You can expect lots of overtaking on the inside, dramatic lane-switching manoeuvres, sudden stops, speeding, and surprising levels of aggression. Your first few weeks of driving will be an ordeal, but you will quickly learn to drive defensively and soon that speed demon driving about 30cm behind you and flashing his headlights to tell you to move won’t even bother you.
