The most advisable way for getting around here is by car. If you don’t own a car, you can hire one and make use of the taxis available. Because of the heat, very few people walk for making use of the reasonable public bus services. Motorcycles are used by youngsters who are prepared to face the traffic.

Oman’s highways are of an excellent standard and international traffic symbols are in use. Major roads are of two or four lanes with roundabouts at busy junctions. If you are new to the roads, be aware that drivers on the inside lane have priority over those entering the roundabout, so don’t be surprised if someone jumps from the inside lane to the exit.

Road signs are almost always signposted both in English and Arabic, as are street and house numbers. However, people tend to rely on landmarks rather than road names to give directions. Landmarks are shops, hotels, petrol stations or distinctive buildings usually. Remember, it’s common to refer places to by a nearby landmark, rather than its real name.
