Sur has an ideal location; it is a great starting point for exploring Oman. It has great beaches and several interesting things to see and do nearby. For example turtle watching at Ras Al Hadd is only 45 km along the coast or The Wahiba Sands (Oman's beautiful desert) is reached within a one hour drive. From Muscat there are two roads to Sur. The Sur highway is the best loption for a smoother ride. The 300 Km single tarmac road, leading through the mountains and crossing some wadis, will take you to Sur in between three and four hours. And if you have 4 WD and don’t mind few bumps you can take the coastal road. In terms of distance is much shorter only about 150 km; but will take four hours to navigate. In Quriyat turn right to Sur at the round about, and then follow the asphalt road and keep following the sign posts to Sur, before long tarmac changes to gravel.
