   Transportation

In the absence of an extensive public transport system, cars are definitely the most popular way of getting around in Oman. The costs involved in buying, insuring and maintaining a car are very reasonable, and fuel is up to 50% cheaper than in many parts of the world.

Apart from taxis, the only other form of public transport in the Sultanate is the coach and bus service provided by Oman National Transport Co whose main depot is based in Ruwi. The timetable is as follows, but Omanet would strongly recommend contacting the company before embarking on any journey to verify times.

It’s possible to drive through any of the borders in your own vehicle if you obtain insurance to cover both countries.

You need extra insurance if you wish to take a hired car over the border to/from UAE and you must return the car to the country in which you hired it (unless you’re willing to pay a huge premium).

The speed limit is generally 120 km/h. the interchanges take the form of roundabouts spaced approximately 7 km apart. Each roundabout contains unique features to enliven the streetscape. The roundabouts are named for driver navigation.

Driving standards can be less than perfect, however, and upon your arrival in these cities you may fear that you’ll never be able to get behind the wheel. However, the sooner you start driving the quicker you’ll get to know your way around your new area.
