Sohar Fort
This big square fort is one of the largest in Oman, and since it was whitewashed it is a dazzling landmark in central Sohar. The main fort is fairly plain, with open spaces and small guntowers, but the most interesting part of your visit will be when you enter the keep, which houses the Sohar Fort Museum. Spread over three floors, this museum details the archaeological, geological and anthropological history of Sohar. It also touches on parts of greater Arabian history that have influenced the development of the town, such as the silk route and copper mining. Each exhibit is clearly explained and well illustrated. From the top floor of the museum there are steps to the tower’s roof where you’ll have incredible panoramic views over plantations, across the mosque to the mountains or out to sea. An English-speaking guide is usually available in both the fort and the museum. The fort is open from 08:00-13:00 Saturday to Wednesday, and from 09:00-13:00 Thursday and Friday. Admission is 500 baisas. To get there, take the city centre exit off the Muscat-Dubai highway, and after about two kilometres turn right at the second roundabout.
