Khareef Season
The city of Salalah is known as the “perfume capital of Arabia” The city is a popular destination for tourism due to the natural attractions of the nearby mountains and abundant stands of frankincense trees lining mountain wadi courses. Around the city and into the mountains the countryside is lush and green during the monsoon period with the vegetation supporting herds of cattle. The climate supports wildlife often more commonly associated with East Africa, such as leopards and hyenas. The beaches and coastline are also major attractions for scuba diving and bird watching.
The coastal region is subject to weather conditions quite different from the rest of the country and such as scenery is completely different to that in many areas further north. From June to September the monsoon rains active in the Indian Ocean clip southern Dhofar and the countryside comes alive in explosion of greenery, featuring lush green fields, swollen rivers and beautiful water falls. The foothills of mountains a few kilometers inland are often covered with thick blanket of fog during this time. The rain and fog causes’ significant temperature drop, making Salalah a popular destination for residents of other gulf Countries trying to escape the summer heat.
Salalah Museum
The museum is the cultural centre of Salalah and offers visitors an extends display of traditional literary works, ancient scriptures and coins dating back to the 11th century, pottery dating back to the Middle Ages and traditional irrigation tools and manuscripts. In the lobby there is an exhibition of Wilfred thesiger’s photographs of Salalah and the other parts of Arabia in the 1940’s and 1950’s.Entrance to this museum is free of cost.
Leaving from Salalah and traveling east, this tour visits many historical sites and places of interest along the picturesque coast including the fishing village taqa with its watchtowers and castle. Further on khor Rouri, a fresh water creek now separated from the sea. It is the site of the ancient city of samaharam, known for its Frankincense and for being the former capital of the Dhofar region .Also on the tour is Mohammed Bin Ali’s Tomb, The Ayn Razat ornamental gardens, The Hamran water springs and the historical trading centre of Mirbat.
