The coastline features numerous fishing villages and ports, and the area’s beaches are home to some of the most important turtle breeding grounds in the world. Inland, you’ll find a combination of breathtaking wadis and dramatic expanses of sand dunes. Masirah’s beaches are internationally recognised for their importance as turtle breeding grounds. Four species of turtle come ashore to lay their eggs here – green turtles, hawksbill, olive ridley and loggerheads. Masirah is thought to be home to the world’s largest nesting population of loggerhead turtles, estimated at 30,000 females.
The beaches of Masirah Island’s east coast offer some of the best surfing in the region, with waves of seven or eight feet on a good day. The summer months are also a good time for windsurfing, but the strong winds that lash the island during this time can be unpleasant and make camping on the beach quite uncomfortable. The beaches are also a great location for camping, and you’ll may find yourself sharing your habitat with donkeys, camels, goats and gazelles that roam the island.
Conchologists will be in their element here as the beaches are home to a vast range of shells, some of which are quite rare.
