Until the growth of Shatti Al Qurum in the 1990s, Madinat Qaboos was the most expensive residential locale in Muscat. It is also a popular choice of residence for expatriate workers in Muscat, particularly Westerners. There is a small but friendly shopping centre in the area, the main attraction of which is a big Al Fair supermarket (with a lively community noticeboard). Also in this centre is an excellent branch of Family Bookshop (24 600 084), a Pizza Hut, a Starbucks, a travel agent, a laundry and an interesting restaurant with local flavour and a jungle setting: Kargeen Caffé. You’ve also got a great Mexican restaurant in the centre – Pavo Real is an authentic and lively venue that has all the right ingredients (tequila included!) for a fabulous night out. Apart from the lively Mexican atmosphere on offer any night of the week, Pavo also hosts a legendary karaoke night on Mondays. The British School of Muscat (BSM) follows the English National Curriculum and has been established in Muscat since 1971. Apart from being an excellent educational establishment, BSM also contributes to the community by allowing its facilities to be used for various activities (such as dance classes, karate and singing groups). The Scientific Nursery is also popular with expat mums. The Medident Centre offers general medical care, as well as dentistry and prenatal care. It is staffed by expats.
