He name ‘Oman’ is said to come from the Arab tribes that migrated to the area from a place in Yemen called Uman. The Omani’s were among the first Arabs to embrace Islam back in 630 AD and Oman became an Ibadhi state ruled by an elected religious leader Imam.
History of Trading
Oman’s geographical position on some of the world’s most trade routes between Africa and Asia has given it a unique dimension. From the first to third centuries, the southern part of the country was one of the wealthiest regions in the world due to the ancient trade in Arabian horses. Oman became the prosperous sea faring nation.
Leadership
His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said assumed power on July 23rd 1970,and the day is celebrated as Renaissance Day. He was only 30 years old but already had a strong vision for his country. He spent his youth in Salalah, Where he educated until he was sent to private school in England. Sultan Qaboos also served in Royal military Academy as a officer cadet.

1962 Oil is discovered in Oman
1970 Sultan Qaboos comes to power as the Sultan of Oman.
1971 Oman becomes the member of United Nations and the Arab league.
1981 Oman joins with the other Gulf countries to form the Gulf cooperation Council (GCC)
1984 The first branch of Oman International bank opens its doors
1986 Sultan Qaboos university opens
1996 Sultan Qaboos issues a decree clarifying the laws of royal succession and granting basic human rights for all citizens of Oman
1997 Two women are elected to the Consultative Council
1999 Oman and United Arab Emirates settle their border disputes
2000 Oman joins the World Trade Organizations (WTO)
2003 All Omani citizens over the age of 21 are given the power to vote
2004 The first female government minister is appointed
2006 Oman signs free trade agreement with the USA
