   Night life

Muscat has a reasonable number of bars. Most are located within hotels and the 'in' places are a hive of after hours activity. In addition to the bars reviewed here, there are plenty of others (usually in the smaller hotels), that may not attract the regular crowd but which are still worth popping in to, if only to try a change of scenery.

Some of the cooler hang outs implement a member’s only policy that allows them to control the clientele frequenting the place. At quieter times though, non-members may have no problem getting in, even if unaccompanied by a member.

Basically, the management uses the rule to disallow entry if they don't like the look of you or your group, in which case they will point to their sign and say ‘sorry’. Large groups of men are often refused entry, so breaking up your group by recruiting some friendly ladies is a worthwhile tactic.

Getting irate really won’t get you anywhere, so if you’re refused entry your best bet is to move on and find somewhere else that’s more accommodating.

Most bars have a reasonably relaxed attitude to their customers’ dress sense. Some places, however, insist on no shorts or sandals, while others require at least a shirt with a collar and no jeans.

Nightclubs generally have a dressier approach, so dress to impress. As Oman’s reputation as trendy tourist destinations grows, the dress code will no doubt get stricter.
