   Climate

Salalah, close to the Arabian desert, enjoys a tropical climate through most of the year. Temperatures are very hot in the summer soaring up to 40 degrees but in winter can fall down to 22 degrees. The town is subjected to the south-west monsoons. This period (late June to early September) is known as the khareef season. Khareef is a colloquial Arabic term used in southern Oman for the south east monsoon. The monsoon affects Dhofar province from about June to early September. Towns such as Salalah depend upon the khareef for water supply. An annual Khareef festival is held in Salalah to celebrate the monsoon and attract tourists. The coastal fringe of Dhofar and Salalah is touched by the winds of the southwest monsoon between June and September.  The surface winds encourage an upwelling of colder waters in the Indian Ocean which cool the over-lying moisture-laden air.
