Most of the land used to belong to W.J. Towell, a prominent contracting firm in the country, and in the late 1970s they sold plots of land for residential development. It was in this period that the area was given the name Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos. On the other side of the main Sultan Qaboos highway is the leafy suburb of Madinat As Sultan Qaboos, which is also referred to as Madinat Sultan Qaboos, Madinat Qaboos, or most commonly by the abbreviation ‘MSQ’. It is here that you will find a high concentration of villas inhabited by expats, particularly British expats. Perhaps part of the reason is that this is the location of the renowned British School Muscat, one of Muscat’s best schools (www.bsm.edu.om). The British School provides high quality education for children from the age of 3 right up to A-levels, and follows the English National Curriculum. It is also a community meeting point for all kinds of activities from Scottish dancing to karate.
