   City History

Kumzan Fort is just outside khasab, which was built in 1600 AD by the Imam but little is left of it today, apart  from the two watch towers. Khasab towers was built in the 1600s by Portugeese invaders as a stronghold in Khasab Bay. The large central watch towers within the castle walls is thought to have existed even before the portuguese built the castle itself. There are small cannons facing the sea – these were still in use as recently as the 1990’s, although not for the defence purpose but rather to announce the sighting of the moon and the beginning of the Eid celebrations. Kumran fort is also built around 1600 AD by Imam, today there is little left of the fort apart from two watchtowers. The town is relatively spread out and has numerous date palm plantations. Town relies on fishing, trade and agriculture for subsistence, and produces a range of fruit and vegetables. Infact in Arabic the word Khasab means ‘Fertile’.
