   City History

Heading towards central Muscat from Seeb, Al Khuwayr is on the south side of the main road. It is home to a few ministry buildings as well as some banks and embassies. There are some very impressive buildings to be seen in the area, most notably the head office of the Oman International Bank. The front doors are 10 metres high and plated in 24 carat gold, and the interior is just as impressive. If you pass by early enough, you’ll see the doors being polished every day. The architecturally splendid Zawawi Mosque is also found in this area, just off the main road.

Al Khuwayr has its fair share of shopping opportunities, although there are no big shopping malls. Al Zakher Centre has an Al Fair and a range of small shops, and there are plenty of other independent shops scattered around the area. Al Khuwayr Commercial Centre is billed as the area’s obligatory souk, although it is more of a shopping centre.
